چکیده

50 A groundwater investigation including several pumping tests has been carried out by 51 Thames Water Utilities Limited (TWUL) to improve the understanding of the 52 distribution of hydraulic properties of the Chalk in the Swanscombe area of Kent in 53 south-eastern England. The pumping test behaviour is complicated by: the fractured 54 condition of the Chalk, simultaneous pumping from adjacent boreholes, and variable 55 pumping rates during the test. In addition, the groundwater flow system is 56 complicated by quarrying of the Chalk. Analytical solutions for pumping test analysis 57 fail to represent these complex flow processes and cannot reproduce the observed 58 time drawdown curves. A layered cylindrical grid numerical model has been applied 59 to the results of the Swanscombe pumping test. This model can represent the 60 heterogeneity of the aquifer and the detailed flow processes close to the abstraction 61 borehole such as well storage, seepage face and well losses. It also includes a 62 numerical representation of the moving water table using a grid that deforms to 63 eliminate numerical instabilities. The analyses of the test results demonstrate that 64 they are significantly influenced by fracture flow, which needs to be included to 65 improve the simulation of the groundwater system; not withstanding this, the layered 66 cylindrical grid numerical model reproduced many of the features in observed time67 drawdown, which allowed an assessment of the hydraulic characteristics of the 68 aquifer as well as the investigation of the impact of quarries on the test results. This 69 has demonstrated that the numerical model is a powerful tool that can be used to 70

Aquifer heterogeneity characterization with oscillatory pumping: Sensitivity analysis and imaging potential

[1] Periodic pumping tests, in which a fluid is extracted during half a period, then reinjected, have been used historically to estimate effective aquifer properties. In this work, we suggest a modified approach to periodic pumping test analysis in which one uses several periodic pumping signals of different frequencies as stimulation, and responses are analyzed through inverse modeling using a...

A Numerical Investigation into the Effect of Controllable Parameters on the Natural Gas Storage in a Weak Reservoir-type Aquifer

Natural gas storage process in aquifer, due to fluid flow behavior of gas and water in the porous medium and because of their contact with each other under reservoir conditions, faces several challenges. Therefore, there should be a clear understanding of the injected gas behavior before and after the injection into the reservoir. This research simulates the natural gas storage in aquifer by us...

Groundwater whirls in heterogeneous and anisotropic layered aquifers

Groundwater flow is affected by heterogeneity in the anisotropy. Our investigations started with some simple numerical experiments consisting of one or two homogeneous anisotropic blocks. Three-dimensional pathlines in such models have the shape of spirals; bundles of spiralling pathlines were termed 'groundwater whirls'. The present research also deals with hypothetical models of stratified aq...

Stream depletion predictions using pumping test data from a heterogeneous stream–aquifer system (a case study from the Great Plains, USA)

This uniquely designed study investigates a fundamental issue—the feasibility of predicting stream depletion rates using linear uniform two-dimensional models. Required input for these models includes the hydraulic parameter estimates of the aquifer and the stream–aquifer interface, which may be obtainable through pumping test data analysis. This study utilizes pumping test data collected near ...

Why hydraulic tomography works?

Head measurements at a single observation well during a cross-hole pumping test carry a great amount of information about aquifer heterogeneity other than the average property of the aquifer as implied in Theis analysis of aquifer test. In this commentary, we use simple examples and a probabilistic reasoning approach based on Darcy’s law to unravel this information, buried in the results of qua...
